partner with me in supporting a unique program in israel

Dear friends and family,

Since making aliyah, I’m very thankful to have found and become involved in a community called SHIUR.

SHIUR in Israel is a growing group of Tel Avivians from various backgrounds–artists, sabras, olim, Arabs, high-tech folks, religious Jews, and others–that seek to engage with Jewish texts and world thinkers in a way that is intellectually fun and profoundly meaningful.

It is a unique experience to find the connections between, say, 16th-century Kabbalists, Nietzsche, and Conrad. We do this through direct engagement with their writings, and for me I often feel the impact of their ideas on a deeply personal level.

The experience is elevated by the unique settings: the conversation happens in a Tel Aviv art gallery or on a Jaffa rooftop over a Shabbat meal, surrounded by like-minded individuals who also want to delve into the great Jewish texts and essential works from other traditions.

What makes it all possible is SHIUR’s founder, Micki Weinberg. He puts a great deal of care into curating a selection of texts and leading a discussion that will challenge us while necessitating our participation. He wants us Jews here in Tel Aviv (and in the Diaspora) to engage our finest thinkers, and to include individuals outside the tribe, especially after October 7.

As a new oleh, it is important for me to create a space of exploration, learning, and community. SHIUR has been that space for me.

We are now organizing a series of Shabbat programming with courses, cultural performances and SHIUR community shabbat dinners during the next 12 months—and I would be grateful for your support to help make this happen.

On October 25, I’ll be co-hosting a special coexistence Shabbat dinner with Jews and Arabs coming together in Yafo-Tel Aviv, and I invite you to join me in supporting this unique project.

These events create real impact in Israel and beyond.

Thank you!

 About SHIUR in Israel…

We believe, now it is crucial to work on “internal defense” by engaging with intellectual and spiritual questions that shape our sense of what Israel stands for and what it means to be Jewish and or Israelis (this includes all Arab and non-Jewish inhabitants and citizens). Given the global nature of discourse about the War, engaging in discourse with our international community is key.

Support our important actions involving Jewish & Arab, secular & religious coexistence and unity programming, including:

Regular in-person SHIUR gatherings in art galleries, cultural spaces, and other locations, where Jews and Arabs, Israelis and foreigners, come together through text-based discourse, led from both within the community as well as with different guest scholars. Thinking together, reading together, developing ideas and experiences together–is vital now as different narratives attempt to draw us apart.

Jewish tradition, practice and ritual offers us a unique and meaningful way to engage with the challenges of our time. From re-imagining Shabbat and Havdalah rituals, to innovative readings of classical Jewish and Hebrew texts will allow for transformative encounters, growth, and a new sense of community and identity.

Original cultural programming in Israel

Art plays a vital role in times of war and instability. We support and create original art, music, and cultural events directly relating to what’s happening in Israel. We also have events in Europe and North America that are directly related to our activities in Israel—building bridges between all our communities.
